Angelic Ascension

Head bowed and heart crushed to share that singer/performer extraordinaire CLYDIE KING (75) has made her angelic ascension… We shared a birthday, August 21, and the Dallas native is indisputably a platinum card carrying beauty of the Bad-Ass Vocalists Hall of Fame. If your mind has no memory of her name, your ears have been subliminally intimate with her voice.

Clydie was one of Ray Charles’ Raelets, an early member of Little Richard’s band, sang on many of producer Phil S…pector’s signature sessions and had the moxie to lend her fiery voice to recordings clean across the spectrum of music. Beyond her plethora of singles as a solo artist and leader of groups in the early days of Rock & Roll (including Brown Sugar and The Blackberries), Clydie performed with hundreds of artists including B.B. King, Bob Dylan, Quincy Jones and John Williams (film scores), Steely Dan (The Royal Scam, “Black Cow” and “Deacon Blues”), Billy Preston (I Wrote a Simple Song), Richie Havens, The Rolling Stones (Exile On Main Street), Odetta, Tina Turner, Leonard Cohen, Leon Ware, Jimmy Webb, Paul Williams, Michel Colombier, Ringo Starr, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt (“Desperado”), Bonnie Bramlett, Jimmy Witherspoon, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Joe Cocker, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Humble Pie, Bob Seger (“We’ve Got Tonight”), Lynard Skynard (“Sweet Home Alabama”), America, Diana Ross (“You Do It”), Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, Dusty Springfield, Bette Midler, Carly Simon, Freda Payne, Thelma Houston, Cher, Mama Cass, Lonette McKee, Charles Wright, Shuggie Otis, The Three Sounds, John Klemmer, Maxayn, Elkie Brooks, Melvin Van Peebles, Joe Walsh, Al Kooper, Tommy Roe (“Dizzy”), Leo Sayer (“You Make Me Feel Like Dancing”) and many, many more. Most darling of all, she was a frequent backing vocalist for Barbra Streisand, including being an onscreen member of her group The Oreos in the film “A Star Is Born” (1976)…”ZZZZZZAPPPPPP!!”

Put your feet up on the dash and let God do the drivin’, Clydie Mae Crittendon. You have more than well-earned your angel wings my sweet Leo cutie pie. Rest in Rock `N Soul Power!! <3 <3
